Our Patron Saint
Rabban Hurmizd
Rabban Hurmizd was born in the mid 17th century in the city of Shiraz, now known as Ahwaz in Iran.
His father鈥檚 name was Joseph and his mother鈥檚 name was Thecla. This Saint grew up in a household full of true Christian faith. His parents were devoted to fasting, praying and helping people in need.
At the age of 12, he entered school and started reading sacred books, gaining spiritual education and leaning towards religious work, casting secular ones aside. He would constantly tell his parents: 鈥淚 must become a monk and work according to God鈥檚 will鈥. Until one day, as the righteous one was in a deep sleep, he dreamed a strange dream.
Lord Jesus Christ was sitting upon the honoured and glorious throne, and the heavenly forces were standing in front of him and glorifying his divinity. In this bright vision, one of the angels comes close to the righteous one and with his right hand, places a beautiful golden crown on his head. When he awakens from his sleep, this episode strengthens his resolve to become a monk.
One day, at the age of 20, Rabban Hurmizd farewelled his parents and left their home on his journey. He began performing miracles with the help of the Almighty and by depending on and believing in the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, when he said to his disciples;
鈥淕o therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to the close of the age.鈥
Matthew, 28:19.
Rabban Hurmizd continued his life performing miracles, cleansed lepers, walked on water, healed the sick and even raised the dead. He lived a life that was full of prayer and fasting.
He passed away on the Monday following the third Sunday of the Resurrection having lived for 86 years.
Many churches have been named after this saint, and many persons have been called by this blessed name.
A great saint and hero of the Assyrian Church of the East, Rabban Hurmizd was, and still remains, a great light for all believers. We pray to our Lord Jesus Christ that He sends His servant and saint to protect this School that is named in honour of this Faith.
